Colorado Department of Transportation, Colorado State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies will conduct a statewide “The Heat Is On” DUI crackdown until May 15 to keep state roads safe from impaired drivers.
The enforcement period coincides with spring celebrations and festivities, such as graduations, spring breaks, outdoor festivals, baseball season and numerous 4-20 events that will involve the consumption of alcohol and cannabis.
In 2016, 1,555 arrests were made during the five-week spring enforcement period. The crackdown this year involves 108 Colorado law enforcement agencies.
The blood-alcohol-content limit for driving while ability impaired is 0.05 percent. For driving under the influence, the limit is 0.08 percent. First-time DUI offenders can be punished with up to a year in jail, license suspension and steep fines. Penalties increase for repeat offenders.
