Ever since hearing of the shocking death of Speedway clerk Jadah Wilmett, who was stabbed to death at her job early Monday, I’ve felt great empathy with the parents and friends for the senseless loss of a young woman’s life. My heart goes out to them all.
I also feel outrage at Speedway for placing a young woman all alone and vulnerable on duty in the middle of the night with her only protection a panic button that did nothing to save her life.
Certainly, I see benefit to our community for Speedway having its gas pumps operational 24/7, but what purpose does it serve to keep the convenience store open into the wee hours? Those who come there late at night for cigarettes or another six-pack of beer could certainly wait for morning.
And if Speedway chooses to continue with “business as usual” they jolly well need to provide real protection and safety for any employee at risk alone at night. For me, this tragic event is on Speedway, and they need to make amends for what happened - going forward, for sure.
