As the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango, I was deeply saddened when the Pride Flag that flies outside of our fellowship doors was stolen.
The first time this happened, the last week of September, the holder was broken in half and only part of the stick left behind. The second time this crime of disrespect occurred was only six days after we had replaced the flag and holder. This time, not only were the flag and pole removed, but the bracket was torn out of our brick wall.
Our religious principle that affirms the inherent worth and dignity of every person calls upon us to lift up and welcome those of all gender identities, sexual and affectional orientations. Our faith also teaches tolerance for others of different religious understanding.
We take seriously this hostility toward our values. We will not be silenced from expressing our truth in respectful ways. We will replace our flag once again, and continue to fly this symbol of hospitality to all.
