Thomas Pidcock of the United Kingdom won the elite men’s cyclocross world championship on Sunday in Fayetteville, Arkansas, finishing the nine-lap race 30 seconds ahead of Lars Van Der Haar of the Netherlands in 1 hour, 36 seconds.
Eli Iserbyt of Belgium rounded out the podium positions in third. Pidcock also had the fastest lap in the race, 6:32.
Guy Leshem, a junior at Fort Lewis representing Israel in the race, finished 34th, completing seven laps before getting cut.
“Valiant effort,” said FLC endurance coach Chad Cheeney. “We are very proud of Guy for showing up and giving it his best with the world’s best.”
Curtis White was the top U.S. finisher, placing 12th in 1:02:24. Eric Brunner finished 17th, Kerry Werner placed 21st, Caleb Swartz placed 22nd, Scott McGill finished 24th, Gage Hecht placed 28th, and Lance Haidet finished 30th for the United States.
The Netherlands dominated the women’s elite race with five of the top six finishers, including the champion and the runner-up. Marianne Vos had the race’s fastest lap, 7:32, and finished 1 second ahead of Lucinda Brand in 55:01 to take first.
Clara Honsinger was the top finisher for the U.S., placing 11th in 57:27.
Raylyn Nuss finished 15th in 57:51, Hannah Arensman crossed 21st in 59:19, Anna Megale placed 25th in 1:00:41.
In the men’s U23 race, Belgium riders claimed the top three spots. Joran Wyseure won the race in 49:21. Scott Funston was top U.S. finisher, crossing 17th in 52:05.
In the women’s U23 race, the Netherlands claimed all three podium spots, led by champion Puck Pieterse (46:27). Madigen Munro finished eighth in 48:43 to lead the USA while Katie Clouse placed ninth.
Swittzerland’s Jan Christen and the United Kingdom’s Zoe Backstedt won the junior rainbow jerseys.
