After seven events, the Durango High School boys and girls track teams both lead their Southwestern League foes at the SWL championships, which Durango is hosting.

The DHS girls are in first place with 59 points, followed by Montrose (31), Grand Junction (29), Fruita Monument (23.5) and Grand Junction Central (9.5).

The Durango boys, meanwhile, amassed 43 points on Day 1 to take the early lead. Grand Junction is second with 19 points, followed by Central (18), Montrose (14) and Fruita (9).

“I think our kids are performing well,” said DHS head coach Johhnny Bertrand, noting that it was nice to be at home before traveling the next couple of weeks.

Land Lambert broke the SWL meet record in the 3,200, placing first in 9 minutes, 28.32 seconds. Damian Frausto placed second in 9:31.46, just 0.01 off the previous record. The two runners were in a pack of five after two laps and steadily pulled away.

“Land running a league record is a big deal,” Bertrand said.

In the girls’ 3,200, Central’s Tristian Spence grabbed the lead right away and held on to finish first in 11:18.14. Willow Lott of DHS pulled away from the field to place second in 11:47.32. Nina Quayle crossed fourth in 12:18.91, and Dewa Ilg grabbed the last point with a fifth-place finish in 12:30.83.

Will Knight won the discus with a throw of 152 feet, 1 inch.

Jaxon Fancher knocked off a half second in the 100-meter prelims to move into 14th in the state at 11.28.

Kenna Patcheck, Mariah Maestas, Mason Turner and Halle Moore won the 4x200 for DHS in 1:53.30.

Naomi Smith cleared 4-01 to place fourth in the high jump, 10 inches behind Fruita’s Gracie Lloyd.

Grand Junction’s Miller Jones also broke the SWL meet record in the triple jump with leaps of 46-10.5.

The championships will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday at DHS with the 100-meter hurdle finals. The last event, the 4x400 relays, are scheduled to begin at 11:10 a.m.
