Durango High School’s volleyball and boys soccer teams both welcomed to Piedra Vista to town on Tuesday, and both Demon squads finished on top to extend their winning streaks.
The DHS boys soccer team, which is now the No. 1 ranked team in Class 4A, scored a 10-0 win over the Panthers to stay undefeated and move to 8-0 on the year.
The volleyball team, meanwhile, won 25-13, 17-25, 25-10, 20-25 and 15-10 to score its third win in a row and improve to 7-2 overall.
Nik Korte scored twice to lead the soccer team and has now scored seven goals in seven games this season. Six other Demons also scored in the game while PV had a pair of own goals. DHS led 7-0 at halftime and was able to enact the mercy rule in the second half.
“It was a really balanced performance,” said DHS head coach Danny Suits. “It was good to have it spread around.”
The win came on the heels of a tight, 2-0 win over Grand Junction on Saturday at home.
“Saturday was a battle,” Suits said. “We were tested, but we finished really strong.”
Teryk Webber scored a first-half goal for DHS, getting an assist from Korte on a free kick and then scoring with behind-the-back flick. Suits called it “a clinical finish.”
Lucas Foster then scored a late insurance goal for the Demons.
DHS also got three goals from Charles Gleason and two from Korte in a 10-0 win over Grand Junction Central on Friday, helping DHS move into first place in the 4A Southwestern League. DHS, now 8-0-0 overall, 2-0-0 SWL, will next play the second-place team in the league, Fruita Monument (5-1-1, 1-0-0), at 1 p.m. Saturday in Grand Junction.
“We don’t look at rankings too carefully, but we’re a confident bunch,” Suits said. “We’re focused on one game at a time. This will probably be our hardest stretch of the season and I’m expecting a really physical match (against Fruita).”
On the volleyball court, Aava Dreger had 18 kills and Leah Wolf spiked 16 to help DHS down Piedra Vista. Eva Stewart had 48 assists, averaging 9.6 per set, and served four aces. Emma Burns had six blocks in the game. The Demons also had 130 digs, led by Wolf (36), Brooklyn Messier (27) and Dreger (24).
Next, DHS will play 4A/5A Southwestern League foe Montrose away at 5 p.m. Friday. DHS leads the SWL at 2-0 while Montrose is currently second with a 1-0 league mark. MHS is 2-6 overall.
