The Durango High School girls basketball team trailed Grand Junction Central by five points at halftime on Friday. The Demons, however, went on a huge run in the second half to not only take the lead, but also continue pulling away from the Warriors. The Demons outscored Central 26-2 in the third quarter and eventually won the conference game, 51-32.

The DHS boys also took on Grand Junction Central on Friday, but came up short in their contest, 49-32.

The Durango squads were also scheduled to play at Grand Junction on Saturday.

IHS boys take down Panthers, 55-50

Dazed by visiting Montezuma-Cortez’s early three-point shooting, the Ignacio Bobcats rallied to earn a one-point halftime lead, keep it after three quarters and ultimately prevail 55-50 Friday night inside IHS Gymnasium.

Junior guard Phillip Quintana keyed the home team’s second-quarter comeback with seven points, then added eight – six via two of his three three-pointers – during the final frame in totaling a game-high 17. Junior center/forward Gabe Cox followed with 14 points, while senior guard Eppie Quintana and junior guard Devante Montoya each contributed seven.

Lady ’Cats hang on at home

Trailing MCHS 13-11 after one quarter of varsity girls’ basketball on Friday, Trae Seibel’s crew took control during the second. Outscoring the Panthers 24-8, IHS went into halftime up 35-21. Despite Montezuma-Cortez fighting back after the break – and winning the second half 35-33 – Ignacio had enough of an advantage to win 68-56.

BHS girls bid for upset

One doesn’t often see an 11-point Pagosa Springs girls’ basketball lead disappear completely.

But after seeing their halftime lead on Friday nearly erased by the 3A/4A Intermountain League’s ultimate underdog, Bayfield, the Pirates outscored the Wolverines 19-2 during the last quarter-and-a-half to secure a 37-18 road win.

Pirates torch BHS boys late

Poised to make their 3A/4A Intermountain battle on Friday the stuff of league lore, neither the Bayfield Wolverines nor the Pagosa Springs Pirates wanted to give an inch through two-and-a-half quarters.

But when PSHS senior guard Gunner Dozier and sophomore guard Colt Lewis buried consecutive 3-pointers to increase the guests’ lead to 38-28 with 3:09 remaining in the third, one side at last had a true upper hand. Senior guard/forward Kayson Shahan also drained a three while posting seven points in the quarter, which ended with Pagosa Springs ahead 42-33. Unfortunately for BHS’ boys, the Pirates were just getting started.

Lewis knocked down two more treys and Dozier made another before closing out the clash by going 6-of-6 from the free-throw line as PSHS – ranked No. 8 in the week-starting CHSAANow.com Class 4A poll – racked up 27 points during the final eight minutes to win 69-44.

DHS hockey shuts out Pueblo County

The Durango High School ice hockey team played its final regular season games on Friday and Saturday at home against Pueblo County.

On Friday, the Demons dominated the Hornets 8-0.

The two teams then faced off again on Saturday, but results weren’t available at press time.
