With protests experiencing violence all over this nation, we are blessed that Durango still has civility despite strong differences between factions. Durango should teach other communities the true value regarding the freedom of expression without allowing intolerance act as a catalyst toward undesired violent conduct. Farmington, including San Juan County, New Mexico, would benefit from these lessons.
According to a Letter to the Editor in the Tri-City Record, the protest in Farmington was not entirely peaceful (Tri-City Record, June 25). Furthermore, it narrowly escaped nastiness. According to the author, two young men were armed and openly displaying their weapons to the “No Kings” protesters across the street. Their efforts of intimidation failed.
In addition, “older instigators” attended. Instigators are bona fide troublemakers who fuel conflict, yet when violence commences they retreat before becoming victims, which hurts those who kept their bad company. Instigators are among the worst of cowards.
Finally, a potential stalker followed the man, an elderly veteran. This nutcase tried to provoke the old vet by belittling his years of service in uniform.
Again, be thankful for the tolerant environment in Durango. Your residents are an inspiration because of their civic values, intelligence and maturity. Farmington hosts danger. Many Coloradans shop in nearby Farmington, but because of the violence, I would not blame anyone for openly boycotting Farmington. Perhaps an economic boycott would force change toward civility.
