A man was found dead Tuesday evening near the Shearer Creek Trailhead on Florida Road (County Road 240) northeast of Durango.

La Plata County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chris Burke said preliminary investigations revealed the cause of death was “accidental.” The department has yet to release the victim’s identity, saying next of kin has not yet been notified.

“This call originated at 5:05 p.m., when a passerby requested assistance at the bottom of the Shearer Creek Trailhead,” Burke said. “The deceased’s vehicle was towed from the scene, and the next of kin have not been notified yet.”

Dozens of residents drove past the scene Tuesday evening during the evening commute.

Burke described the incident as an accident but declined to elaborate. He said no public danger exists.

Burke said more information about the man’s identity and the cause of death will be released once the coroner and the Sheriff’s Office notifies next of kin.
