I am fortunate to have grown up in Durango and to have returned in 1976 for my 10th class reunion and, coincidentally, a new job. Lucky me!
Since the 1990s, we, as taxpayers, have had oil and gas property tax revenue that has significantly helped pay for the multiple excellent county services we have all benefited from. And over the last several years, the county has warned us that oil and gas revenue will decline due to reduced production and the massive development of newer and extensive oil and gas fields elsewhere.
So, coupled with our extensive population growth, La Plata County does not have sufficient revenue to continue providing the services we have taken for granted. Public safety, emergency response, roads, elections, court services and public health are all services facing budget cuts. Let’s do the right thing and pass 1A.
