Junior guard Kimball Anderson got Bayfield’s girls on the scoreboard Friday evening with a 3-pointer, not knowing she’d be the only Wolverine to connect from anywhere on the court in a 56-7 home loss to 4A Alamosa.
Anderson also ended up netting two free throws during the third quarter and a 2-point bucket during the fourth, but the proverbial writing was already carved into the wall after the Mean Moose dominated and won the first frame 19-0. After senior Jaelin Garcia and junior Audrina Knorr helped get AHS (11-5 overall, 5-2 3A/4A Intermountain) off and running with six, and five first-quarter points respectively, freshman Kyla Hawkins netted her first nine during the second quarter as the visitors’ lead stood 39-3 at halftime.
After coasting through the third quarter and carrying a 44-5 advantage into the fourth, Alamosa then got another eight points from Hawkins. Freshmen reserves Brooklyn Schrader and Egypt Holman each netted a 2-pointer down the stretch, giving AHS nine scorers in the rout.
Hawkins ended up with 19 points and Knorr 12 (all during the first half). The Moose made seven out of 15 attempted free throws in gearing up to host 4A Montezuma-Cortez (7-10, 2-5 IML) the next afternoon.
Two out of five from the charity stripe, Bayfield (3-14, 0-7) was to travel on Saturday to La Jara and face 3A Centauri (13-3, 7-0).
BHS BOYS GET IT DONE: Rested and recovered, more or less, from a humbling 34-point home loss to M-CHS six days earlier, Bayfield’s boys got back on track Friday night with a 52-40 victory over Alamosa.
Junior forward Tanner Vyborny scored a game-high 20 points for the Wolverines, and sophomore Davis Roderick contributed eight, six via two three-pointers.
Twelve of Vyborny’s points came during the fourth quarter, helping BHS outscore AHS 17-12 when it mattered most—after also having led 28-18 at halftime and 35-28 through three quarters.
Senior center Kingston Wilcox paced AHS (7-11, 2-5 IML) with his 15 points (eight during the fourth), and senior guard Victor Zepeda scored 13 in defeat.
BHS improved to 4-3 in league and 11-6 overall prior to visiting Centauri (6-10, 2-5 IML) the next afternoon.
