Club to purchase Cowboy Church

The Animas Alano Club has signed a “Letter of Intent” to purchase the Cowboy Church, 2601 Junction Creek Road in Durango. The Alano Club will hold meetings and events for various 12-step programs in the community, including Alcoholics Anonymous, and will be actively seeking corporate, church and government financial sponsors to meet requirements for a down payment.

LPEA’s Tom Compton earns Director Gold honor

Tom Compton, vice president of the La Plata Electric Association board of directors, has earned the Director Gold credential offered by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

This certificate recognizes directors who have earned their Credentialed Cooperative Director or Board Leadership Certificate and are committed to continuing their education throughout their service on the board. Compton has served on the LPEA board since 1998, and he is a Credentialed Cooperative Director. The Director Gold credential is offered by NRECA to help directors comply with laws, understand evolving technologies and apply leading governance practices.

To earn the credential, Compton was required to complete a core set of five courses, followed by a variety of elective courses in topics ranging from finance to technology, and meet a continuing-education requirement.

Know Your Dough needs volunteers

Know Your Dough is in need of some volunteers to teach programs to fourth-, seventh- and 11th-graders. Ideal candidates will have teaching experience and knowledge of the financial services industries, such as accounting, banking and investing and, last but not least, a passion for working with youth.

Programs are currently scheduled for this spring in the Durango, Mancos and Bayfield school districts. Students will learn about needs and wants, saving and budgeting, debt and credit, investing and protecting your money. Programs typically last five hours and meet for one hour per day for an entire week during regularly scheduled social studies classes.

Icon Series Master class on real estate to be held

The Icon Series Master class with Jama Fontaine, Rookie of the Year, will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, 1300 West Navajo, Farmington.

After 16 years selling real estate, Fontaine retired to pursue training, coaching and leadership for brokers.

San Juan Basin Health adds three new members

San Juan Basin announces the following new hires:

Care Coordination Services announces Catherine Gustavson as the newest Health Care Programs for Children with Special Needs nurse care coordinator. Gustavson has her bachelor’s in cellular and molecular biology and is a registered nurse. She has experience as a pediatric nurse and care coordinator with Nurse Navigators.

Ashley Micikas was recently hired as the promotor program manager. She graduated from the University of Colorado in 2011 and began working as the director of a community health clinic in Guatemala for four years before relocating to Durango. Micikas was the sexual health and immunization clinic coordinator and will continue her work with Latino and other underserved populations to provide chronic disease prevention education and assist clients in gaining access to health care.

Janice Bryan is the newest nurse home visitor with Nurse-Family Partnership. She comes with professional experience with Planned Parenthood, Indian Health Services, Southwest Oncology and 9-R School District. For the past 15 years, Bryan worked as a disaster response volunteer with Medical Teams International and provided aid for refugee populations and internally displaced people during natural disasters in Afghanistan, Liberia, Uganda and Indonesia. She holds a bachelor’s in public health education and an associate’s degree in nursing.

SCAPE introduces new entrepreneurs on March 10

SCAPE will hold 2016 Companies Meet our New Entrepreneurs from 4 to 6 p.m. March 10 at SCAPE, 1211 Main Ave. Suite No. 1.

Jeweler, art shop now in 800 block of Main

Diane West Jewelry & Art moved to 820 Main Ave. on Feb. 14.

A full remodel has been done at the new location. Local jeweler Gretchen Magwitz and Santa Fe sculptor Sheryl Zacharia will join the group of artists at Diane West Jewelry & Art.

A grand opening with both new artists will be March 4.

Financial firm hires new associate, holds seminar

Speicher/Hayes Financial Group has hired Laura Catton, a new senior client associate. She has been in the industry since 2010 and oversees the day-to-day administration of accounts.

New hire at American Family Insurance

Christopher McClure Agency of American Family Insurance announces the hire of Tom Hiles. Hiles has been in the insurance business for 40 years. He received the CLU degree and has been in Durango since 2002. He specializes in personal insurance and life insurance.
