Wayne’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hill, operated a dairy farm on the Florida Mesa east of Durango, where this photo was likely taken. Robert, a native of Pagosa Springs, graduated from Durango High School in 1938 and started college at Fort Lewis in 1939. By 1940, he was married and working in Uravan for the Manhattan Engineering Project, building a uranium mill. During World War II, he was a pilot in the Army Air Corps. After his military service ended in 1945, he returned to Fort Lewis and received an associate degree in engineering. He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Utah State University. He then worked at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque and later attended the University of Northern Colorado, where he earned a master’s degree in engineering. He taught at Metropolitan State College in Denver, where he retired in 1982 as a full professor. In 1939, the Shelby Hiawatha “Arrow” was considered a high-end bicycle and is now a coveted vintage bike by collectors.
