Colorado’s U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, D-Denver, is a man of substance and character who cares deeply about our state. He is known for making a constant and concerted effort to reach across the aisle for the benefit of all Coloradans and our country. It is no surprise, then, that he has hired a person who shares his values, and has the smarts, savvy and broad-based experience to represent him successfully statewide.
In Julie Levy Duvall, a 2005 Fort Lewis College graduate, student body president and trustee, he has made an excellent choice for his next state director, a position often reserved for political pros from Denver. But Bennet recognizes talent when he sees it.
Julie is a Colorado native from Denver who spent 15 years in Durango. Her experience belies her years and, at 33, she has already accomplished much in the public, private and nonprofit sectors.
Sen. Bennet values his relationship with Western Slope communities, a relationship Julie will be able to maintain as much from her own contacts and connections as those she looks forward to fostering in her new role.
Julie has worked with college students and for the CEO of a multi-national corporation. She speaks Spanish conversationally, and through her work experience is fluent in education, energy, environmental and community and economic development issues too. Julie knows the Front Range and Western Slope and is just the person to initiate dialogue, bridge conversations and connect communities across Colorado.
As state director based in Denver, Julie will oversee constituent services and community engagement, as well as the day-to-day operations of seven regional Senate offices. Julie has expressed her indebtedness to the people who coached her in her professional development at Fort Lewis College and in the communities where she has worked.
It is Julie’s parents, however, who read her the newspaper as a child and explained things she did not understand who also taught her about civic engagement, duty and responsibility. It is they whom we have to thank for setting her on a path of public service.
Good luck in the new job, Julie. We are all rooting for you.
