The Wall Street Journal, Durango Herald, our two gubernatorial candidate, and of course the oil and gas industry claim that Proposition 112 is just “too extreme.”
FYI: Prop. 112 demands a common-sense buffer zone of 2,500 feet between any new fracking wells and occupied structures or other sensitive areas such as waterways or playgrounds, in order to protect our health and safety. “Too extreme?” Seriously?
Here is what I think is too extreme: putting concrete shafts one mile deep into the ground in order to get to the methane trapped in the shale rock way down there; continuing drilling horizontally up to 10 miles and fracturing the rock along the way; forcing millions of gallons of fresh water mixed with an undisclosed brew of toxic chemicals into the fractures to release the gas; dumping that water into holding tanks, thereby keeping it forever out of the natural water cycle; allowing the wells to leak highly toxic gases, such as benzene and methane, into the air, next to schools, playgrounds, actually all along the Front Range, in vast areas along I-70 and in the vicinity of Durango; endangering our health and well-being by poisoning our air and our water, endangering our kid’s future – all that, indeed, is way too extreme.
Please vote in the midterm elections and vote YES on prop. 112. We have plenty of sunshine and plenty of wind here in Colorado to safely and economically power our future.
