Among the many indignities of modern commercial air travel, besides the unconscionable expense and contribution to global warming, is having to hump all your possessions like a sore-backed Sherpa through serpentine security lines and across endless terminals. Those who put up with it do because there is no practical alternative.
Many of our homeless fellow residents are always in the same predicament. We are still seeking ways to alleviate their general condition, but in the meantime, the Neighbors in Need volunteer alliance has come up with a smart, practical way to let them temporarily store their possessions (“Lockers to be installed at Transit Center for homeless,” Nov. 19).
Making their lives a little easier will not encourage more homelessness in Durango, we do not think, but it could help pave their way to escaping from it if they choose. It is also a kind thing to do, which should not be discounted.
