100 years ago: “Instead of the Fourth of July celebration being a long drawn out affair covering three or four days with nothing of special interest on the program the Durango celebration will be only of one days duration but every minute will be filled with hilarity and merry-making.”
75 years ago: “Although the San Juan Basin participated in Colorado’s record over the holiday of reporting no fatal accidents Durango and vicinity had a number of minor collisions and other accidents.”
50 years ago: “Chief Gray Squirrel and his family started evening dancing before the depot to welcome back the passengers on the narrow gauge. This morning a tractor and blade levelled the dancing area in front of the station from which all parking has been barred. A campfire may be added. Dances also are held each morning on the platform.”
25 years ago: “Traveling this summer were 11 Smiley Junior High School students who did their history teacher a favor and toured him around Washington, D.C. Yes, the indefatigable Brett Henry lived to tell about it.”
