Letters: Durango council is afraid to let us vote

Aren’t we, as Durango citizens, fortunate to have City Council members that realize we are not able to think for ourselves?

They know we can’t be trusted to vote correctly as far as an unnecessary plastic bag ban is concerned. If you happen to think differently than they do (as if they actually think), then you are wrong, without any discussion, that they will ignore anyway.

Their minds have been made up well before their adoring supporters faked a demonstration to “prove” their bag ban agenda was popular.

The City Council has absolutely no intention of allowing a vote on this matter. They know that those of us who have not been brainwashed, will rationally vote down the totally feel-good nonsense that they propose; as we did when it was last proposed.

Mayor Melissa Youssef is embarrassed that Her Town still has the wherewithal to allow plastic bags. No non-thinking liberal can even imagine such a thing. The photo of the dolphin suffocating on a plastic bag in the Animas River should be proof enough for anyone.

The council’s compromise will be ... let’s charge them, if they don’t want the ban, for the bags they use, and give the money to some wasteful environmental nonprofit.

As long as they can string this along, wasting staff time and money, they can avoid the important issues like the bridge at 32nd Street and the completely ignored destruction of College Drive that will make that corridor to the city effectively unnavigable. Tourists beware!
