Let your freedom ring

Custom-made chimes to honor war veterans

Salute to Veterans board members will hang custom designed wind chimes throughout Durango on the Fourth of July for passers-by to find and present to veterans.

Board members and several Durango High School students will hang the 50 handmade wind chimes at dawn Friday in front of Main Avenue businesses along the Animas Rver Trail, in Buckley Park, Santa Rita Park, Rotary Park and other public places where people will gather for festivities, said Carolyn Plested, a Salute to Veterans board member.

Each wind chime will have a tag on it that asks the finder to present the chime to a veteran in recognition of his or her service. One of the chimes has a gift certificate for a dinner at the Red Snapper attached.

This is the first year that Salute to Veterans has done the Let Freedom Ring project, which is designed to honor La Plata County’s 4,000 veterans, she said.

“Our chimes signify our grateful thanks for the freedoms we treasure and that are protected by America’s armed forces,” she said. “They have served us, now it’s our turn.”
