Leaving Spearfish with a bad taste in their beaks

Skyhawks softball drops series finale after three-game win streak

One bad inning couldn’t sour two good days for the Fort Lewis College softball team.

The Skyhawks split the second day of their four-game series against Black Hills State University on Monday in Spearfish, S.D. after winning both games Sunday.

FLC (11-11, 7-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) beat the Yellow Jackets 6-2 in the teams’ early game, continuing its offensive roll from the previous day.

The Skyhawks collected 10 hits and drew nine walks while Victoria Johnson only allowed two earned runs in seven innings of work in the circle for the win.

“It was a solid team win,” FLC head coach Kira Zeiter said. “A lot of people were able to contribute.”

Things seemed to keep going well until the seventh inning of the series finale.

FLC took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a Tehenia Telliano home run, and Kamali’i Peneku added another with a home run in the sixth.

Peneku batted in another run in the top of the seventh inning to give FLC a lead it thought was safe.

The Skyhawks led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Yellow Jackets scored two runs to avoid the sweep.

FLC returns home for its next series against Colorado Christian University, which starts at 12 p.m. Saturday at Aspen Field on FLC’s campus.

“You always have to look forward to next weekend. When we get back we’ll start to prepare for our next series,” Zeiter said. “They’ve been solid for the last couple years. We need to be prepared for that series.”
