Durango Parks and Recreation will hold a season opening event at 4 p.m. Friday at Chapman Hill Ice Rink.
Festivities will kick off with the gear swap at 4 p.m. and a free barbecue sponsored by the Palace Restaurant at 5:30 p.m. This is Durango’s only ice-skating gear swap. People can bring unwanted items to Chapman Hill before 4 p.m. All gear will be free.
Participants will be able to test out gear and skate for free from 4 to 6 p.m. Chapman Hill staff will be available to answer questions about the upcoming season, and Durango Area Youth Hockey Association board members will be available to answer questions about the group’s programs. Fort Lewis College Club Hockey players will be on ice to give pointers and help with gear selections.
A live band public skate will take place from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Playing with Skunks will rock live at center ice with an electric light show. Admission is $5 for all ages and skate rentals are free. Tickets will be sold at the front entrance. Bleacher seating is available for spectators.
Donations for the band will be accepted at the front desk. For more information, visit www.DurangoGov.org or call 375-7395.
