Oige Kennedy finally got his clean sheet. Artur Piperkov, Alberto Capdepon and Maik Brandt made sure it was in a win.
The Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team (3-0-1) defeated Texas A&M International (1-3-0) 3-0 on Monday at Dirks Field for its first shutout of the season.
“I think that was one of the main things we were concentrating on this week. We were disappointed not to get it on Thursday (against Mary),” FLC head coach Kennedy said. “I thought the way we approached the game, even when we put different guys in throughout the game, they still worked super hard to get a clean sheet. That’s so important; it’s a team effort.”
The Skyhawks’ defense held TAMUI to five total shots for the match, only one of which was on goal.
Piperkov made his return from injury after missing FLC’s first three games with a leg injury as a substitute in the first half.
He made an almost immediate impact, scoring the Skyhawks’ first goal in the 41st minute on a chip shot after a long pass from Brandt.
“I’m happy to be back; that’s the most important thing,” Piperkov said. “I just had one practice before the game. It was a good feeling.”
Alberto Capdepon doubled the Skyhawks’ tally from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute on a rocket shot to the keeper’s left.
The foul was one of 20 total TAMUI infractions compared to 10 for the Skyhawks.
The Dustdevils drew four yellow cards in the match, and at one point Juan Ramirez tried to lift Capdepon and drag him off the pitch when he was on the ground injured.
“We have guys with really strong character. Obviously the opponent was quite big and physical,” Kennedy said. “I’m really proud of the guys – they didn’t react; they didn’t get involved in any sort of physical things they didn’t need to.”
Brandt sealed the Skyhawks’ win with his first FLC goal in the 76th minute, picking a ball out of a post-corner kick scrum and burying it with his left foot.
“It’s an amazing feeling to help my team with that,” he said. “I was in the right spot to the right time.”
FLC will enter Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday with a home game against Adams State.
