Fort Lewis College cycling powers through snow in cyclocross race

Snow-covered cyclocross course provides plenty of fun

A sloppy course covered in snow resulted in a fun day of racing for the Fort Lewis College cycling team.

Professional cyclist and Olympic mountain bike hopeful Keegan Swenson claimed the men’s A category race Saturday at the Durango Performance Center 4 Corners Cyclocross Series at Ray Dennison Memorial Field on the Fort Lewis campus.

The Cannondale sponsored rider edged local legend and Trek rider Travis Brown, and Fort Lewis team rider Cody Cupp placed third in the 50-minute timed event that covered a 2-mile course and featured local college riders against Durango riders of all ages.

In the open women’s race, Fort Lewis’ Sofia Gomez-Villafañe won once again in the 40-minute timed race. Tough Girl rider Brianne Marshall took second, and Ska-Zia-Trek rider Brittany Clawson claimed third place.

Snow Friday night and early Saturday morning blanketed the course, making an already difficult cycling event all the more tricky. Riders had to tackle tough hills, and maintaining balance wasn’t a sure thing.

For the collegiate racers, the event served as a nice tune up for the 2016 Collegiate Cyclocross National Championships, which will be held Jan. 5-11 in Asheville, North Carolina.

FLC is coming off a national championship in mountain biking.
