Ignacio football tries for two in a row against Montezuma-Cortez on homecoming

Bobcats try to make it two in a row against Panthers

The Ignacio football team will welcome Montezuma-Cortez to Bobcat Stadium on Friday night with the Bobcats looking for their second consecutive win against the Panthers.

Ignacio rolled to a 37-12 victory in the meeting last year in Cortez.

A win against Cortez would be even sweeter this year, as the game will serve as the Bobcats’ homecoming game.

The Bobcats (1-1) enter Friday coming off a bye, last stepping on the field two weeks ago with a 13-6 win after scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter against Crownpoint, New Mexico.

The Panthers (0-2) are searching for their first win of the season after two tough matchups to start the year.

Cortez had trouble getting its offense going and its defense settled down against Grand County of Moab, Utah, and New Mexico’s Kirtland Central. In their two games, the Panthers have averaged just 111.5 yards of offense per game while the defense has allowed 94 combined points.

Cortez’s issues could be soothed against the Bobcats, who have averaged 14.5 points per game this season while trying to replace the production of last season’s large graduating class.

However, Ignacio started to show signs of improvement in the fourth quarter against Crownpoint, and with an extra week to prepare this week another jump in progress could be seen against the Panthers.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday in Ignacio.
