Travel north of Durango may be tough through Saturday

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the northwest San Juan Mountains through 5 p.m. Saturday. For Friday, the National Weather Services forecast for Durango has a 60 percent chance of a rain-snow mix. A rain-snow mix is expected until 10 a.m. turning to rain after 10 a.m. On Friday night, the weather service says snow is likely in Durango with accumulations of up to 2 inches.

In Durango, the Weather Service has a chance of snow in its forecast through Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday.

For Friday, the weather service lists a 60 percent chance of a rain-snow mix. A rain-snow mix is expected until 10 a.m. turning to rain after 10 a.m.. On Friday night, the weather service says snow is likely in Durango with accumulations of 1 to 2 inches.

In Silverton, the weather service expects 1 to 3 inches of snow during the day Friday and up to 4 more inches Friday night.

A winter weather advisory means periods of snow and blowing snow that will cause travel difficulties is expected. Anyone driving in the Northwest San Juans should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility. Winds are expected to blow between 15 and 25 mph.

The winter weather advisory also covers the Dallas Divide, Grand Mesa, Battlement Mesa, the Sawatch Mountains and the Uncompahgre Plateau.

In the southwest San Juan Mountains a winter storm warning for snow and blowing snow with winds up to 20 mph is in effect until 5 p.m. Saturday. This warning covers Silverton, Rico and Hesperus.
