Letter: Escalante students enjoy newspaper encounter

My name is Lindsay Dalton. I teach 6th Grade Language Arts at Escalante Middle School.

I recently provided a Durango Herald for each of the students in my class so they could read the Jan. 29 article, “A new search for a camp,” about the hunt for a new location for the Purple Cliffs camp for people experiencing homelessness.

This article tied in with a story about homelessness in our textbook; it was a great way for the students to connect the topic to our local community.

I was really impressed by how fascinated they were with the paper. Many of them had never held a newspaper before and asked if they could take theirs home. It was fun to watch them take the sections apart and then try to put them back together again.

I asked our principal, Jeremy Voss, if we could provide our students with a paper on a regular basis. Thankfully, he agreed this is a positive thing to purchase for our students.
