After Gary Harris and No. 2 Michigan State tangled with Julius Randle and the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats on Tuesday night in Chicago, he and Spartans teammate Adreian Payne came out on top with a new handle – the new No. 1 in college basketball. Randle, the highly touted freshman, scored a game-high 27 points, but Harris had 20, and the Spartans beat Kentucky 78-74 in the earliest matchup of the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country since Feb. 23, 2008, when Tennessee beat top-ranked Memphis – coached then by John Calipari, who now coaches the Wildcats.
