Baken, Chandler and Wiegert Durango’s selections to All-Southwestern League teams

Trifecta of DHS basketball stars honored by coaches

Lucas Baken, Katrina Chandler and Katie Wiegert lit up the Durango High School gymnasium during the 2014-15 basketball season. Playing in limited home games, they had plenty of chances to showcase their talent to opposing coaches.

Those three Demons all earned All-Southwestern League nominations for their efforts. Chandler was named to the girls first team and Wiegert to the girls second team, while Baken was named to the boys first team.

The DHS girls finished 16-9 before a first-round state tournament loss. As just a sophomore, Chandler scored 12 points per game while averaging 4.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.3 steals per game.

She played big role when Wiegert, the team’s leading senior, went down with an injury in the middle of the league season.

“Katrina is definitely deserving of the award. She was consistent and stepped up in scoring when Katie was not able to play during a crucial part of the season,” DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick said. “She made a name for herself.”

Wiegert averaged a team-high 13.1 points per game, scoring a season-high 31 points against Ignacio at Fort Lewis College on Jan. 8.

She also was selected to play in the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports All-Star Game, and she competed in the game last weekend in Arvada.

“Katie wasn’t able to play ion a few key games, but she had a great season,” Fitzpatrick said.

Baken, a junior, was the Demons’ lone selection to the all-league team. The 3-point specialist led DHS in scoring.

Grand Junction’s Sydni Brandon, a Fort Lewis College commit, was the girls player of the year, and Grand Junction’s DJ Wells was the boys player of the year.

Ryan Voehringer of Montrose boys and Sam Provenza of Grand Junction girls were named the coaches of the year.
