The raw results may appear dark, but the Bayfield High School volleyball team found some bright spots playing at Lewis Palmer’s tournament Saturday in Monument.
The Wolverines went 1-3 in the tournament, beating Aurora Central 2-0 (25-20, 25-9) and losing to Berthoud 2-0 (25-23, 25-14), Thompson Valley (25-14, 25-19) and CHSAA Class 4A No. 4 Pueblo West (29-27, 25-23).
“We actually had a great day. That match against Thompson Valley was really our first of the year in testing out a young lineup,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said. “We were playing with them, and they did break away from us. We were a much better team (Saturday night) than we were (Saturday) morning. We played a great match against Pueblo West. They barely escaped us.”
The Wolverines are playing with a roster full of freshmen and sophomores whose varsity experience has been limited before this season.
They only have two seniors on the roster, neither of which played last year.
Despite that, BHS (2-3) found a way to compete with four schools at least one classification larger than itself.
“I’m really starting to see glimmers of an exciting season,” Foutz said. “We’re just young enough to make key mistakes in big matches, but we’re also just competitive an athletic enough to cause some problems for others. It’s actually pretty fun right now. They played hard, they learned, we had some great moments. It was a trip well traveled.”
The Wolverines have one trip left before they can play at home.
BHS will continue its long-standing series with Piedra Vista on Tuesday in Farmington before hosting Durango High School at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
