Charges dropped against Durango man suspected of double stabbing at homeless camp

Prosecutors dropped charges against a Durango man suspected of stabbing two men at a homeless camp west of city limits in August after repeated attempts to reach the victims were unsuccessful.

Hernando Tsosie, 39, has had numerous run-ins with the law, including pleading guilty in July to invasion of privacy for sexual gratification for peeping into the women’s bathroom at the Durango Welcome Center.

He was free on a personal recognizance bond when he was suspected of stabbing the men and hitting his former girlfriend Aug. 28.

According to an arrest affidavit, Tsosie became upset when he saw his ex-girlfriend hanging out with two other men around her campsite.

The affidavit said he attacked the men, stabbing one in the back of the left thigh with a knife, and hit and choked his ex-girlfriend.

The second man suffered a deep slash to his right palm and scrapes to his face, according to the affidavit.

Tsosie was rearrested Sept. 1 in connection with the double stabbing and was being held at the La Plata County Jail without bail.

Sixth Judicial District Attorney Christian Champagne said the stabbing case was dismissed Nov. 30 and Tsosie remained in custody until he was sentenced Dec. 19 for invasion of privacy for sexual gratification in the first case.

Tsosie was sentenced to 60 days in jail, for which he already had credit, and 48 months probation.

Durango Police Department named Tsosie one of this week’s most wanted fugitives after a warrant for his arrest was issued Dec. 31 on suspicion of failing to comply with his probation requirements.

Tsosie also faces two counts of retaliation against a witness or victim in a third case.
