Dear readers,
Graffiti has become an almost ubiquitous feature of urban landscapes. It shows up under bridges, in alleys and countless other surfaces that make up our concrete jungle.
But more often it is showing up in neighborhoods, on private property and on natural surfaces that make up our public lands.
Given the context, graffiti can be perceived as an art form or vandalism.
The markings elicit different reactions from different people. Reactions vary based on the quality of work, the amount of defacement, the financial and cultural impact, and the messages being conveyed.
A fun message in a discreet location with big bubble letters and well-done shadowing is likely to evoke a different response than a lazy squiggle on someone’s garage door by a wannabe gang member.
We are asking readers to help us document instances of graffiti in and around Durango. When you see it, please snap a quick photo, note the location and tell us your general reaction to the markings.
Send photos to herald@durangoherald.com with “Graffiti” in the subject line. We will use your photos, descriptions and reactions for a future story.
Thank you!
