Durango High School boys basketball can’t hang with Grand Junction in 62-45 loss

Grand Junction delivers another 62-45 loss to Demons

Durango and Grand Junction have played two league games so far this season, and the outcome has been the exact same regardless of where the games have taken place.

In the Jan. 22 Class 4A/5A Southwestern League opener in Durango, the Tigers jumped out to a big lead and never looked back in a 62-45 road win. On Friday night in Grand Junction, the result was the same as Durango lost by the same score, 62-45, in a similar fashion.

Once again, the Tigers got out to a fast start and never trailed. This time, a 7-0 run to start the game paved the way for another easy win. Grand Junction led by seven at the end of the first quarter and held a 32-23 lead at halftime.

Instead of trying to work their way closer to the basket and create some high percentage looks, the Demons were content with turning the game into a shootout with the sharpshooting Tigers. The result was not good as 21 of the Demons’ 23 first-half points came from 3-point range. While seven 3-pointers in a half is impressive, the Demons only managed to net two points from inside the arc and the struggle continued in the second half as the home team pulled away.

Durango will try to turn things around at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Grand Junction Central.
