FLC women’s lacrosse closes out season with loss to UCCS

The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end on Sunday in a 13-9 road loss to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The Skyhawks end the season with a 3-10 overall record and a 3-7 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The loss marks the end of the careers for seniors Averi Basso, Makena Carter and Rebecca Kiyokawa.

The Skyhawks were outshot 34-31 for the game. The teams were even at 30 ground balls each and totaled 29 turnovers on the day. The Mountain Lions had a 16-10 advantage in draw controls.

Junior Haley Dostie led the team with two goals and an assist. Her 45 goals this season are the most in a single season since Jessica Norby scored 47 in 2012. Freshman Valerie Garcia enjoyed a two-goal outing, the first multi-goal game of her young career. Sophomore Diamond Velasco added one goal and dished out two assists for three points.

Freshman Samantha Rodgers led the team with four ground balls to go along with her first career goal. Junior Ellie Martinez and Delgado followed with three ground balls each. Senior Makena Carter led the team with two caused turnovers. Senior Averi Basso played all 60 minutes at goal, recording 11 saves in the effort.

The Mountain Lions (6-10, 5-5) will advance to the RMAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will face No. 2 Colorado Mesa University (10-5, 9-1) in the opening round. No. 7 Regis University (15-1, 9-1) will host the entirety of the tournament as the regular season champions, beginning against No. 4 Westminster (4-6, 4-6). FLC finished fifth in the conference, one game behind Westminster.

Ellie Martinez finished the season with 15 goals, followed by Kaylin Vanzant with 12 and Nina Polk with 10. Valerie Garcia assisted a team-high eight goals.

Basso made 130 saves this season, stopping 43% of the shots she faced.
