Legends will test current Skyhawks in annual race
Fort Lewis College has long hosted an annual cyclocross race, and this year’s event is scheduled for Saturday.

It’s not quite ski season yet for Fort Lewis College cyclists, as the Skyhawks will host the fourth race in the Durango Performance Center 4 Corners Cyclocross Series (4CCX), which will see three heats beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ray Denison Memorial Field on the FLC campus.

The Fort Lewis cyclocross team will compete against riders from all over the region, including Rocky Mountain College Cycling Conference teams and many of Durango’s finest cyclists.

The racing will begins at 10 a.m. with kid’s Races, which will see help from Durango DEVO and Fort Lewis cyclocross riders. In the kid’s race, there will be two categories: 10-and under and 10-and over for both boys and girls.

The Open Women, Men B and Men 50-plus categories will begin at 11 a.m. for a 40 minute race.

“Sofia Gomez Villafañe and the rest of the women’s CX team are looking to build their form against some tough local competition in preparation for the 2016 Collegiate Cyclocross National Championships,” FLC cycling director Dave Hagen said in an email to The Durango Herald.

The Open Men and Men 35-plus categories will start at noon for a 50 minute race.

Fort Lewis seniors Cody Cupp, Payson McElveen, Cody Cupp, Kolben Preble and Ryan Standish will use the race to prepare for nationals, which will be held Jan. 5-11 in Asheville, North Carolina.

Also competing in the open men’s division will be many of Durango’s top cyclists, including Travis Brown and Keegan Swenson.

The adult races are open to all mountain bikers. The entry feeand is $25. Registration will be held at 9 a.m., and there will be a pre-ride led by DEVO and FLC cyclists at 9:30 a.m. to show the course and assist with skills.
