Fort Lewis College softball picks up first win over MSU-Denver since 2015

Skyhawks drop three in weekend series

The Fort Lewis College softball team took down Metropolitan State University-Denver for the first time since 2015 with a 6-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Aspen Field, but would lose the other three games in the four-game series.

In Game 1 on Sunday, The Skyhawks (14-31, 9-23 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, when Kylie Hefley doubled to left-center field and drove in Allison Young and Taylor Hollestelle.

In the bottom of the third, Fort Lewis tacked on three more runs, when Pilar Gutierrez recorded one of her two hits on the day after she singled down the left-field line and advanced to second on the throw after she drove in McKenna Hefley and Young. Mackenzie Parks drove in the fifth run of the game when she had a sacrifice fly to center field and drove in Dana Dwyer.

The Skyhawks added one more run in the bottom of the fourth when McKenna Hefley reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and Taylor Beaman scored to make it 6-0. The Roadrunners (22-23, 17-11 RMAC) got one back in the top of the seventh, but Emily Morris closed the door. Kelly Decker improved to 2-10 this season after she went six innings and recorded 12 ground outs and four fly outs.

In the second game, the Roadrunners’ offense erupted for a 20-5 win in a shortened six-inning game. Fort Lewis led 5-1 heading into the top of the fifth, when MSU put up an 11-spot, and added eight more in the sixth to end the game.

On Saturday, FLC dropped both games, and lost 8-1 and 6-4.

Fort Lewis will head to Pueblo for a pod series against Chadron State College and Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday and Saturday at CSUP’s Rawlings Sports Complex.
