Fort Lewis women’s lacrosse falls to nationally-ranked Regis

Third top-20 loss for Skyhawks

The Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team is unbeaten this year when playing unranked opponents. It’s those top-20 foes that give the Skyhawks trouble.

For the third time this season, Fort Lewis fell to a top-20 team Saturday. The Skyhawks hung close with No. 16 Regis in most statistical categories, but the Rangers had a slight edge and came away with a 13-8 win.

FLC (4-3, 1-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) trailed 6-4 at halftime before seven second-half goals from Regis put the Skyhawks away.

Brooke Galle and Kelli Warmouth, two substitutes off the bench, led FLC with two goals each, and Galle also had an assist.

Also scoring for FLC was Ellie Carpenter, Ryann Pierce, Carly Smoke and Jam Vertner. Saturday was the first time all year Carpenter has been held under two goals in a match.

Alyssa Spencer, a Durango High School alumna, was in goal for the Skyhawks and made five saves while allowing the 13 goals.

FLC was outshot 27-22 and gave up five more ground balls to Regis, losing the battle 25-20.

The Rangers (6-1, 0-0 RMAC) also earned four more free-position shots with nine and won five more draw controls with 14.

Wendy Donier led Regis with five goals, and Erin Todd added three. Hilary Duda also had two goals.

The game was played at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City after being moved from Regis’ home field earlier in the week.

FLC has another road contest at 45 p.m. Thursday against Westminster College in Salt Lake City.
