Man accused of sexually assaulting woman at Durango hotel, posting videos on Snapchat

Suspect’s girlfriend watched video clips the night of the alleged rape

An Arizona man has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman in a Durango hotel room and posting videos of the act on social media, according to police and court records.

Jeremy Jerry Deswood, 38, of Round Rock, Arizona, was being held Friday at the La Plata County Jail on $250,000 bail.

Deswood

Deswood is suspected of raping the woman while she was physically helpless due to intoxication, according to an arrest affidavit.

Deswood attended a holiday work party with a woman on Dec. 16, according to the affidavit. His boss rented them a room around 10 p.m. at the Quality Inn, 2930 Main Ave., because of their level of intoxication.

Deswood’s girlfriend, who was unable to attend the party, said she looked at her Snapchat about 10:30 p.m. and saw Deswood had posted videos of himself performing a sexual act on the woman, according to the affidavit.

The alleged victim appeared quiet and motionless in the videos.

The girlfriend said she was in disbelief. She called Deswood’s family members and asked if they had viewed the videos. They too had viewed the videos, and “they too were in disbelief,” according to the affidavit.

The girlfriend attempted to call Deswood, but the call went to voicemail. About 10 minutes later, Deswood called and messaged his girlfriend to say the videos were not what she thought they were and that he would not do that.

The girlfriend called Deswood’s co-worker who dropped him and the woman off at the hotel. The co-worker confirmed Deswood and the woman were the only two people in the room. He said he made sure they were in bed and ready to go to sleep before he left the room, according to the affidavit.

After the videos were posted on Snapchat, the employee returned to the room. He was greeted at the door by Deswood. The employee observed the alleged victim to be sleeping on the bed with her pants undone and underwear on a nightstand. No one else was in the room, according to the affidavit.

The employee woke up the woman and found her to be distraught and not knowing what had happened. The employee took her out of the hotel room and drove her to Santa Rita Park where they waited for police, according to the affidavit.

The employee who removed her from the motel room told police the woman’s pants had been ripped and Deswood appeared to be heavily intoxicated.

The woman agreed to undergo a sexual assault examination at Mercy Hospital.

Police officers then went to the hotel room where they arrested Deswood.
