Old S.W. Colo. rail lines subject of Saturday talk

Locomotive No. 315, left, was part of the old Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. At right is Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge locomotive No. 480. No. 315 was featured last year during the True West Railfest in Durango.

Local historian John Porco will talk about old railroad lines in Southwest Colorado at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Navajo State Park Visitors Center near Arboles.

Porco specifically will discuss the former Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad and the line that ran through what is now Navajo Reservoir and Arboles, Tiffany and Allison.

Rare and unusual photos, both of the railroad in its heyday and of its current historic remnants, will be shown. Vestiges are scattered throughout Navajo State Park.

The program is free, but vehicle entry to the park is $7 per day and $70 annually. The park offers more than 100 camp sites, many with full hook-ups, and three cabins for rent. To reserve a camp spot or cabin, call (800) 678-2267, or go to the reservation section of the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website, http://coloradostateparks.reserveamerica.com.
