Prep Roundup: Durango soccer dominates Fruita to 3-peat as league champions

Durango wins 3rd consecutive SWL title, avenges only loss

Saturday was the day the Durango High School boys soccer team had been waiting over a month for.

The Demons rode a nine-game winning streak into the highly anticipated rematch with Fruita Monument. Their last and only loss of the season was a Sept. 3, 1-0 shutout delivered by the Wildcats in Durango, and the Demons got payback Saturday.

Max Wilson had a hat trick and the DHS defense posted another shutout as Durango avenged its loss in a big way with a 7-0 trouncing of their league foes. The win extends the streak to 10 and, more importantly, gives the Demons their third consecutive 5A/4A Southwestern League title.

“This kind of game says a lot about the maturity of this team,” Durango head coach Dalon Parker said. “They had us chasing last time, and we wanted to do that to them (Saturday). The boys were so relentless and never let up.”

Just as Coach Parker wanted, Wilson had the opponents chasing before the 11 a.m. crowd woke up. The junior’s first two goals came in the game’s first 12 minutes, and that was only the beginning. Eric Farrar’s blast from 30 yards out made it 3-0.

The Wildcats (6-6-2, 4-1-2 5A/4A Southwestern League) needed halftime to regroup, but it was Durango that made the second half statement. Aiden Urban and Eli Fenton made it 5-0 in a hurry, and the goals kept coming. Wilson added his third and Garret Krispin got in the mix.

“Another league title was a goal of ours, but we have work left to do,” Parker said. “The improvements this team made in the last month were showcased out there (Saturday). We’re still getting better, and there’s more work to do.”

Durango (12-1, 6-1 5A/4A SWL) hosts Fountain Valley at 4 p.m. Thursday. Friday is Senior Night against Grand Junction Central. Both games are scheduled to take place at Durango High School on the new turf field.
