Respect crosswalks, safety of pedestrians

A woman wanted to run me over on Monday. Apparently, she didn’t like that I was walking and using a crosswalk on Florida Road that is designated specifically for pedestrians. She had plenty of time to see me and I didn’t tempt fate; I knew she had time to slow down. And yes, I was making a point. Crosswalks are placed on Durango’s roadways for a reason.

I guess she was in a hurry, probably speeding. As I stepped onto the street, she laid on her horn, called me an “a------.” I pointed to the large bright yellow sign that designates the crosswalk. She rolled down her window and called me a “f------ a------” and told me I was going to get killed. I said, “Read the sign” – even though no actual reading is required. Again, she called me a “f------ a------” and sped by as I crossed the street.

I use that crosswalk often, and about half the time drivers choose to ignore the sign and the clear pavement markings. She was the first to blow her horn and curse me. I fear more and more people are choosing to ignore simple rules of courtesy and safety. I suppose they feel I’m taking away their freedom by adding 10 seconds to their trip. Sad.
