Savannah Kaufmann scores four goals for Bayfield girls soccer in win over Crested Butte

Sophomore scores four goals

The Bayfield High School girls soccer team has been in a groove since spring break.

It continued its momentum and beat Crested Butte on the road Friday, as sophomore Savannah Kaufmann scored all four goals in a 4-0 shutout.

“(Savannah) is fast and has good footwork,” Bayfield head coach Jen Zelinski said. “She gets a lot of one-on-one breakaways.”

Kaufmann scored two goals in the first half to put Bayfield (4-1-1, 4-0-1 3A Region 5 League) up 2-0 at halftime. Zelinski wasn’t comfortable with a 2-0 lead and told her team to keep the tempo up and in the second half.

The Wolverines did just that, as Kaufmann scored another two goals to seal the victory.

“We’re working with her on mental games,” Zelinski said. “We’re trying get her to look for a spot on goal. Her composure was amazing. Being a sophomore now compared to a freshman, she’s growing up and getting experience. She looks really good right now.”

Bayfield dominated Crested Butte from the start despite the Titans getting the first shot of the game. Luckily, Kailee Millard made the save. Millard finished the game with two saves.

Bryannah Isiordia had two assists, and Sophie Turner added one more. Kaufmann finished with 11 shots, Taylor Morris had seven and Millard added two.

Since spring break, the Wolverines have gone 4-0-1 and have outscored their opponents 11-2 since their first and only loss of the season to Salida. Bayfield lost that game 5-2.

“Some of the older girls are stepping up and being leaders on the field,” Zelinski said. “I couldn’t be happier with our performance (Friday). Our defense was winning balls, we were making good passes. It was really fun and pleasing to be part of.”

Senior Maddy Duran did not play because of a knee injury.

Bayfield isn’t back on the field until 7 p.m. April 19 when the Wolverines will travel to Ignacio.
