La Plata County 4-H will co-sponsor a powerful community event at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 19.
“Cracked, Not Broken: The Kevin Hines Story” will be held at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College in Durango. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
WellPac – the college’s Wellness Peer Advisory Council – has invited Kevin to share his inspirational story. Kevin attempted suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and survived.
As a survivor, activist and storyteller, he gives presentations around the country to raise awareness about suicide prevention. For more information about Kevin and this event, visit fortlewis.edu/kevinhines or www.kevinhinesstory.com.
The event will also highlight community resources and local efforts to raise awareness about suicide prevention and destigmatizing mental health issues. In particular, La Plata County 4-H will be there to promote its Communities Overcoming Depressed Youth project.
CODY was established last year in response to the suicides of two of our 4-H members, Cody Ledford and T.C. Rockwell. 4-H is making a proactive effort to address the problem of suicide in our area.
We don’t want to lose another life. Therefore, we must engage all aspects of our community to develop the best strategies to achieve this goal. We meet at 6:30 p.m. every third Wednesday of the month at the Extension Building at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
On May 2 at the fairgrounds, we will host a follow-up community event to the Kevin Hines presentation. More information about the event will be released closer to the date. Please reach out if you or people you know would like to join our organization. We have youth and adult members.
La Plata County 4-H and Colorado State University Extension Office will also co-sponsor another engaging community event. On Saturday, March 17, the Four Corners Farmers and Ranchers Coalition will present “Farmers for America,” a documentary film about the next generation of agriculture.
This will take place at 6 p.m. at the Henry Strater Theatre. Doors will open at 5 p.m.
This documentary highlights the challenges American farmers and ranchers are facing. As the average age of farmers rises, it is critical we support a new generation of agriculturalists to provide our food and maintain our land.
The film tells the stories of urban and rural farmers uniting around how food can bring people together.

The Four Corners Farmers and Ranchers Coalition is a joint chapter of the National Young Farmers Coalition and the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union. Proceeds from this event will support this local chapter.
