Track and Field Roundup: Bayfield boys win in Pueblo; Ignacio hosts meet

Steam rose from the track in Pueblo as it warmed from 24 degrees to the day’s high of 38 degrees. Still, the red-hot Bayfield High School track athletes took first place in boys and second place in the girls competition.

The Bayfield High School track and field team, fresh off some strong performances, decided to test itself against elite competition again Friday and Saturday, this time at the John Tate Challenge Cup hosted by Pueblo Centennial at Dutch Clark Stadium.

Many Friday events were postponed because of bitter cold and high winds. The meet resumed Saturday and was still cold, but temperatures reach ed as high as 45 degrees and allowed the meet to go on. Still, Bayfield’s boys 4x400-meter relay team did not run so that the team could get back to Bayfield at a respectable hour.

It didn’t matter, as the BHS boys won the Division 2 team title, while the girls team took second with only four girls competing.

“The kids that went to this meet did Bayfield proud,” BHS head coach Gary Heide said. “Kudos to them and their dedication.”

Jordan Lanning had another stunning day, as the junior had two first-place results for the Wolverines’ girls. She won the 100 hurdles in 16.08 seconds to edge second-place Jahzara Davis of Sand Creek by nearly a full second. She also won the high jump with a leap of 5-feet, 4-inches, which was two inches higher than Crowley County’s Rylee Haynes, who took second. Lanning laso placed third in the long jump at 16-08.50. She was three inches off the winning leap of Aaliyah Ricketts of Widefield. Lanning added an eighth-place finish in the triple jump at 32-04.50.

Mikayla Barnes picked up another win in the girls shot put with a throw of 35-01. Herenellie Lago of Fountain-Fort Carson was second at 33-06.75. BHS’ Tiarra Christensen was eighth with a throw of 31-04.50.

Christensen placed third in the girls discus with a throw of 102-05. Barnes was fifth at 99-04. The winning throw was 128-05 from Pueblo South’s Jessie Castellucci.

In the girls pole vault, Bayfield’s Hannah Whitmer was second at 7-06. Grace Braune of Pueblo West cleared 9-06 to win the event.

On the boys side, Carl Heide led the way with a win in the 110-meter hurdles. He finished in 15.15 seconds. Elijah Whatley of Bayfield was second in 15.26 seconds. Dax Snooks placed fifth in the event in 15.96 seconds. Carl Heide was beat by Whatley in the prelims by .01 seconds, but he won in the final.

Carl Heide also won the 300-meter hurdles in 39.78 seconds. Wyatt Wieland of Pine Creek was second in 40.15 seconds.

Snooks was third in the boys high jump with a leap of 6-feet. Jeremy Cody of Pueblo South jumped six inches higher to win the event.

Chad Winkler placed third in the pole vault, as he cleared 11-feet. Calhan’s Mikey Mikita was first at 13-06. Bayfield’s Dawson French was fifth at 10-06.

Dawson Heide placed sixth in the 400-meter dash, as he crossed the line in 51.73 seconds. Harrison’s Tyrese VanHorne won in 47.91 seconds.

In the throwing events, Ryan Phelps placed fourth in the discus at 144-02. Lane Walter of Crowley County threw the discus 164-06 to win the event.

Phelps was then fourth in the shot put at 47-04.75, and teammate Wyatt Killinen was fifth at 46-07.50. Coronado’s Charles Broomfield won at 52-09.

Bayfield’s boys 4x100-meter relay team was third in 44.54 seconds. Fountain-Fort Carson won in 43.54 seconds.

Next week, Bayfield will host the Pine River Invitational.

Abel Velasquez Invitational

The Ignacio boys and girls track and field teams came away with sixth place finishes at the Abel Velasquez Invitational Saturday at IHS.

Montezuma-Cortez ran away with the girls title, as the Panthers piled up 117 points. Del Norte was second with 84 points and the DHS JV team rounded out the top three with 74 points. Pagosa Springs finished fourth with 71 points, Dove Creek was fifth with 45 points, followed by Ignacio with 40 points, Dolores with 30 points, Bayfield’s JV was eighth with 23 points and Mancos was ninth with 22 points.

On the boys side, Mancos held off Durango’s junior varsity squad for first place with 115 points. DHS finished with 106 points, and Montezuma-Cortez was third with 84 points. Pagosa Springs was fourth with 71 points, Bayfield’s junior varsity placed fifth with 65 points, Ignacio was sixth with 30 points, Del Norte and Dove Creek tied for third with 29 points, and Dolores finished ninth with 11 points.

Aliyana White accounted for 18 of the Ignacio girls 40 points at the meet. She won the shotput with a throw of 34 feet, 3 inches in the finals, and placed second in the discus with a mark of 94-11.25.

Charlize Valdez placed second in the 800 for the Bobcats with a time of 2 minutes, 56.03 seconds.

Kiana Valdez was second in the high jump with a mark of 4-04.

Charlize and Kiana Valdez joined Emily Cundiff and Vanessa Gonzales to place third in the 800 medley relay with a time of 2:09.17.

The Ignacio boys saw five Bobcats record points at the meet.

Elco Garcia won the 3,200 by more than 10 seconds, as he finished in 11:15.85, and placed fifth in the 1,600 in 5:06.51.

Jonas Naneto placed fourth in the 400 and 800. He ran a 55.37 in the 400 and a 2:12.18 in the 800.

Natoni Cundiff finished third in the shot put with a throw of 41-06, and fifth in the discus at 115-07.
