Woman dies jumping waterfalls at Cascade Creek; two rescued

Two waterfall jumpers cling to rocks in Cascade Creek north of Purgatory Resort on June 27. Three jumpers entered the canyon and soon realized that the water was “still flowing high and fast,” making it dangerous to jump down the series of waterfalls. A young woman died in the creek on Sunday, and two other people were rescued, and they were uninjured.

A rescue turned into a recovery Sunday afternoon on Cascade Creek.

“I can confirm we have a victim,” La Plata Search and Rescue President Ron Corkish said. “But this is in San Juan County, and the sheriff won’t release any more information until the next of kin is notified.”

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office also confirmed the fatality at Cascade Creek. The victim was described as a “young female” on the sheriff’s Facebook Page. The page added that no further information would be available until next of kin is notified.

San Juan County Sheriff Bruce Conrad releases all information via his Facebook Page, and no information had been released by midday Monday. Because thousands of people visit Silverton on the Fourth of July, the sheriff’s office was expected to be busy during the holiday.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office was the lead agency on the rescue. La Plata Search and Rescue and Durango Fire Protection District also were paged, Corkish said.

Emergency responders rescued two other uninjured people Sunday, Corkish said.

Cascade Creek is a popular recreation spot, although authorities discourage people from jumping down the series of falls in the slot canyon.

Three men were rescued June 27 from the creek after they determined water was running “too high and fast” for jumping down the series of falls, they told rescuers.
