Bayfield and Ignacio had solid showings at the Panther Classic wrestling tournament hosted by Piedra Vista on Saturday in Farmington.
In the 15-team meet, Bayfield finished sixth and Ignacio placed 10th.
Garret Beebe (138 pounds), Colby Joosten (145), Shane Moore (170) and Daniel Westbrook (220/285) all went 3-1 for the Wolverines. Dylan Pickering (120) and Cordell Ashcraft (160) went 2-2, and Lane Grimwood (152) finished 2-1. John Foutz was 1-0 at 195 pounds, and Colby Baker went 1-3 at 126 pounds.
Dustin Sanchez led Ignacio with a 4-1 performance at 152 pounds. Hunter Robbins (126/132) went 3-1 with three pin wins. Diego Valencia (126/132) went 3-2, and Cesar Pedragon (182) also went 3-1 with two pin wins. Randy Herrera (285) and Micah Westbrook (160) both went 1-4.
“I am extremely proud of all our young squad and of how they represented our great community of Ignacio,” IHS head coach Jordan Larsen said. “Back to the drawing board for the next few weeks and ready to come back strong after the break.”
Bayfield and Ignacio will attend the Pagosa Springs tournament Jan. 6.
The Demons did not have a wrestler place at the Warrior Classic two-day tournament at Grand Junction Central.
Durango finished 38th out of 42 teams with 16.5 points. Grand Junction took first with a strong performance worth 250 points. Rocky Mountain was third with 187 points, and Thompson Valley placed third with 172 points. Pagosa Springs displayed its strength with a fifth-place score of 163 points. Montezuma-Cortez was 34th with 35 points
Jordan Belt scored 2.5 points for Durango at 160 pounds. He went 1-2 at the tournament. Kaleb McMunn scored six points for going 3-2 at 170 pounds. Austin Albrecht scored one point with a 1-2 showing at 182 pounds. Rashad Liggins scored seven points at 195 points by going 2-2. Durango had five open weight classes.
Durango will host a pair of duals this week, as Pagosa Springs will visit Wednesday and Montezuma-Cortez will face the Demons on Thursday. Both duals are scheduled for 6 p.m.
