Fort Lewis College’s women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, 2-0 to Angelo State, Thursday afternoon in Grand Junction.
The Skyhawks (1-1-1) had a slow start and were unable to catch a Rams (2-0-1) team that tested FLC goalie Caitlyn Espinosa throughout the match. The defense was beaten in the fourth minute on a breakaway goal by Angelo State forward Haley Mendel.
In the 13th minute, Mendel struck again to make it 2-0 and put a cap on the scoring for the evening.
“We started the game off with some tactical errors, and they capitalized with those early goals,” FLC head coach Jimmy Hall said in a voicemail to The Durango Herald. “We put up a good effort in the second half, but we just couldn’t find the back of the net.”
Espinosa made eight saves, and Jordan Hix led FLC with three shots. The Skyhawks were outshot 11-10 but took five corners to zero for the Rams.
The Skyhawks will try to get back on track at 2 p.m. Saturday in Grand Junction against Dallas Baptist.
