The Durango/Telluride Mountaineers’ Midget hockey team traveled to Gunnison last weekend to play in a four-team tournament hosted – and won – by the Gunnison Blades.
In their first contest Saturday, the Mountaineers were shut out 6-0 by the tournament hosts.
Durango/Telluride rode an onslaught of shots on goal to a 10-1 win over Grand Valley (Grand Junction) in its second game Saturday.
Danny Cummins had a goal and two assists, and Gabe Tonnessen and Nico Shapiro had two goals apiece, and defensemen Willy Frownfelter, Liam Millar and Austin McMenimen had a goal and assist each.
Max Laws and Jordan Gardner also scored goals, while Hunter Richey, Riggs Franklin and Willy Hess aided with assists.
On Sunday against Crested Butte, Trevor Croke – assisted by Millar – scored a first-period power play goal, and Frownfelter gave the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead.
Crested Butte answered with three goals in the final 3 minutes, 23 seconds to take a 3-2 lead, then held on by the same margin.
In its final game of the weekend, Durango/Telluride again dominated Grand Valley, outshooting the boys from Grand Junction 27-9 for a 9-2 win and a third-place finish.
Cam Treharne had two goals and two assists; Tonnessen had a goal and two assists; Shapiro added three assists; Laws had two goals; and Cummins had a goal and an assist. McMenimen, Richey, Croke, Gardner and Franklin all registered points in the win.
