Democrat to announce candidacy Thursday

Democrat Mike McLachlan will announce his candidacy for the Colorado House, District 59, at noon Thursday at the La Plata County Courthouse, 1060 East Second Ave.

McLachlan is a 38-year resident of La Plata County, local attorney, former prosecutor and La Plata County attorney.

He has served as Colorado’s solicitor under then-Attorney General Ken Salazar. McLachlan also was a U.S. Marine Corps enlistee from 1965-1967 and served in Vietnam.

House District 59 encompasses Archuleta, La Plata, Hinsdale, San Juan and Ouray counties as well as the southern half of Gunnison County.

Knitting guild to meet Saturday

The Four Corners Knitting Guild will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, 2917 Aspen Drive, in the Wesley Parlor.

Knitters of all skill levels are welcome.

Peace-building lecture scheduled for Thursday

The Life-Long Learning Lecture Series at Fort Lewis College will present “Peace-Building: When Blood and Bones Cry Out” by John Paul Lederach at 7 p.m. Thursday in Noble Hall, Room 130.

Lederach will share his recent foray into peace-building examining how communities can recover and reconnect through making music, creating metaphors and telling their stories of healing and reconciliation.

He will discuss how the process of healing is dynamic and continuing and will detail the phenomenon of social healing.

Rep. Tipton to host open house Friday

Rep. Scott Tipton will host an open house from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at his Durango office, 835 East Second Ave., Suite 230.

Tipton will provide an update about his work in Washington and meet with constituents.
