DHS speech, debate place at competition

Seven students of the Durango High School Speech and Debate team attended the CHSAA state competition.

Amanda Urban took fourth-place in Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking, and James Calvet and Paul Myers took 10th place in Duo Interpretation.

Teachers, students attend board meeting

Escalante Middle School recognizes these teachers – Britte Bowman, Evelyn Black, and Kristina Lambert – for showcasing the talents of Escalante students at the Durango School District 9-R School Board meeting.

Before the meeting, Zack Geauthreaux played a trumpet solo, Kyle Colley played guitar, and the quartet of Kim Crawford, Jassana Baizel, Emily Knickerbocker and Alexis Gurzick played string instruments. Also, Kyle and Josiah Hay sang the National Anthem and Audrey Morris’ artwork was presented to the board. In addition, Bowman shared a print of Morris’ artwork with each of the board members, and Black spoke about the importance of the arts in school.

Philip Ouellette receives scholarship

The Colorado School of Mines Foundation announced that Philip J. Ouellette has been selected to be a ConocoPhillips SPIRIT Scholar for academic year 2012-2013.

The SPIRIT Scholars Program offers professional development and enrichment opportunities. Ouellette is a 2009 graduate of Durango High School and is completing his junior year at Mines, majoring in chemical engineering. He also recently accepted an internship position with ConocoPhillips in Anchorage, Alaska, during the upcoming summer break.

He is the son of Marta and Ken Ouellette of Durango.

DHS student council receives award

Durango High School Student Council adviser Dale Garland announces that the DHS Student Council has been awarded a 2012 National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils for its exemplary record of leadership, service and activities that serve to improve the school and community.

To meet requirements for the award, a student council must demonstrate that it meets a variety of criteria. DHS has been awarded this title for the last three years.
