Driver-education classes available

Four Corners Safety Association will offer its next 30-hour driver-education classes during summer break – June 25-28 and Aug. 13-16. Classes also will take place July 16-19 in Ignacio.

Cost for the class plus six hours of driving required by the state is $385. Classes are limited to 25 students.

DHS Aerospace Team receives contribution

The Durango High School Aerospace Design Team has received a $15,000 contribution from Alliant Tech Systems, an aerospace and defense company.

This is the fifth consecutive year ATK has chosen to support the team. This year, ATK also will help the team gain national exposure. The team will have the opportunity to meet with key experts of ATK locally and at some of their installations around the country.

The team’s design proposal entry for the 2012 competition has scored top honors, making the team eligible to travel to Johnson Space Center and participate in the July 27-30 competition.

This year’s team includes: seniors James Triola, Will Counley and Katy Schneider; juniors Katie Dudley and Chris Walton; sophomores Mariah Dorsey, Emma Greenberg, Jared Engelken, Haakon Sigurslid and Jesse Rubenstein; and freshmen Izzy Riley, Jacob Skeath and River Weiss.

Durango Aerospace is taught and coached by Daniel Garner and is co-sponsored by Steve Powell.

Camille Rand graduates from college

Camille Rand of Pagosa Springs is a May 2012 graduate of Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo.

Rand graduated cum laude with a degree in psychology.

Clark Johnson earns master’s degree

Clark Johnson of Durango graduated from Des Moines University at its 2012 commencement ceremony May 26 in Des Moines, Iowa, with a master’s degree in anatomy.

He is the son of Dr. Vaughn and Karen Johnson of Durango and the spouse of Stephanie Johnson.

Megan Lane named to dean’s list

Megan Lane of Durango, a senior School of Nursing student at Creighton University, was named to the spring dean’s list.

Full-time students who earn a 3.5 grade-point average or better on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the dean’s honor roll.

The university is located in Omaha, Neb.

Blake Sherman graduates from CU

Blake Sherman of Durango graduated from the University of Colorado School of Medicine with a doctor of medicine degree and Alpha Omega Alpha honors May 25.

Sherman, son of Joseph and Peggy Sherman of Durango, is a 2003 graduate of Durango High School and a 2006 graduate of Colorado State University with a degree in biological science.

Sherman will complete his residency in emergency medicine at the Maricopa County Medical Center in Phoenix.

Katrina May named to dean’s honor roll

Katrina May of Durango has been named to the dean’s honor roll at Montana State University in Bozeman.

The dean’s honor roll includes students earning grade-point averages of 3.5 or above for the semester.
